Pongaroa Pedalling Paradise - 3 Days

Pongoroa, Tararua District, middle earth, middle of nowhere.

Fear not though, Green Jersey will happily collect your group from Napier, Palmerston North, Wellington or anywhere in between to get onboard for this adventure.

Three days and two nights exploring real backcountry New Zealand on gravel roads that some days see no traffic at all.

We enjoy country hospitality tremendous views and you will visit one of the most pristine beaches in New Zealand.

Hills? There will be hills, big hills! But also flats, wind – like you have never experienced, but great places to shelter and exhilaration you will not forget.

We will be kitted out with our Green Jersey Kitchenette making coffee and tea to keep you hydrated throughout the ride. This itinerary is fully catered.

We can extend or retract the days depending on the demands of the group, so you can expect to ride 35 – 80 kilometres.

Puketoi Lodge or Glenross Backpackers are our accommodation for the two nights of this tour. Basic, but comfortable and clean.

Day 01 :
Figure 8

Start Pongoroa, ride a figure of 8 loop, South on Route 52 for about 10km, turning right into Rimu Road. We climb on a well packed gravel surface to about 500m elevation before plunging downhill on the Pongoroa/Pahiatua Road into Pongoroa. Lunch in Pongoroa then head north for a few kilometres and ride up tow Waihi Falls and back along the

Waihi Valley Road to Pongoroa. Total distance is about 70km. the route has a fairly generous hill up Rimu Road, but I rode it a week ago and it was perfectly managable. Second part of the road is “Undulating”.

A challenging and satisfying day after a great day one warm up! We will shuttle to a start point, either the Waihi Falls or Hororeka and begin our ascent. It will be a challenge, wonderful to begin then arduous as we continue with potential wind at the top which stopped me and a friend on Sunday just passed. After climbing (or perhaps catching the shuttle) to the top we have 30 km of more or less downhill to Makuri. From Makuri to Pongaroa it is 24km with a solid hill on tarseal, more down than up. You will be tired but satisfied.

Day 03 :

Coast Road to Akitio and River Road back to Pongoroa, again approximately 70 km of flat to undulating roads visiting Mangatiti Falls (a 40 minute walk if any are interested) and Akitio Beach (lunch). Then coming back out through the River Road.

How fit do I need to be?

Pretty fit. The ride is not technically challenging for most riders, but a reasonable level of fitness is required as you may ride 60km in a day.

Grade 1 - 4. What does that mean?

There is a wide range of surfaces to cover during this ride. There are some spots where sand or shallow river crossings makes it impossible to stay on your bike (Hence level 4) but the riding is not technical or unusually dangerous.
